Literature Text

It is a time of dread.
The land of Nippon is shrouded,
In what seems like endless darkness.
The ground was turned to ash,
The air is still, black clouds loom in the sky,
The water does not flow,
And the trees are dead.

The people are starving,
The animals dying.
The world is beginning to fade,
To nothing but a memory.
The Celestials can only look on,
And pray for the sun to shine again.

The Ground suddenly quakes,
And a sound louder then thunder
Echoes over Nippon.
The people quiver in fear,
For they know the time is near.
The beast has become impatient.
It waits for the night of the full moon
And for the dreaded festival to begin.

The beast grows angry.
The time is close.
His eight heads rear up
And a mighty roar breaks the air.
Earth, wind, fire, water
Darkness, light, poison and lightning.
They all hunger for the blood
Of the chosen maiden.

The moon is full.
The time is right.
A maiden will be sacrificed this night.

White and glowing,
The accursed arrow flies to its target.

The beast waits for its bounty to arrive.
The chosen maiden approaches in fear.
Quivering hands, tear stained face.
Towards the cave of the dreaded beast.
Her fate is sealed as soon as she enters.
No one can save her.

The heads of the mighty beast
Appear at the entrance of the cave.
Eyes glowing crimson,
Giant heads mounted on necks
As large as tree trunks,
And a body as large as a mountain.
The beast was unstoppable!

The maiden cringed in fear
And closed her eyes.
The last thing she heard
Was the dreaded beasts’ name:
Yamato-no-Orochi,
The Big Snake of Eight Branches.
I wrote this poem on February 8th 2008. I thought I lost this and all my other Okami poems with it.
I really enjoyed writing it.
I hope you guys like it too :D
