Ghost of the Everglades

Description

This is a very rare albino American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) at the South Carolina aquarium in Charleston.

White or albino alligators are very sensitive to light and are kept in dark enclosures to keep them healthy. This one was very large, close to 8-10 feet long.
They have another name given to them which is the "Swamp Ghost" or "Everglades Ghost." They even have a legend to go with them.

Places that have Albino American Alligators (to my knowledge only):
:bulletblue: South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston
:bulletblue: Alligator Adventure Park in North Myrtle Beach SC
:bulletblue: Reptilia Zoo in Toronto Ontario Canada

The St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park in St. Augustine, Florida, also has them (they had two when we visited). [link]

It is a wonderful zoo - the only in the world that has every species of crocodilian/alligator on ehibit. They also have other animals -mostly primates and birds. One of the most fascinating things is the natural wild rookery in the park that visitors can stroll through on a boardwalk. That alone is worth the visit. It has to be experienced to be believed.
